Hi John I Have been shooting compound now for about 10months and I think I am doing ok considering I am largely self taught. Hear in the uk compound is not as big as in the USA. So a question, I have had several different releases True back tension (Zenith) trigger (carter Chocolate lite) and (the evolution). I am told that the pros use a trigger release, But I find it hard not punch the trigger! I think that if I could master this I would improve greatly. Can you PLEASE help? Thanks good lock Pete |

Hello John This is more of a am I thinking along the wright way. I have just taken delivery of the new Hoyt Katera XL 36", Having shot a Protec for the last 2 years. When setting the new bow up I kept the sight bar set out at the same distance from my old bow but found that I seemed to be very hunched up and very unstable during the shot, so during a club practice night I tried out diferant set ups and came to the conclussion that if I moved the sight bar in by 1.5" closer to the bow it gave me an identicle distance fom my knocking point to the peep as I had on my protec. The protec had a 41.5" axl to axl as the katera has a 36" axl and my draw length is 29.5". Is the conclussion that I have come up with to get my peep hight right going in the right way. The resone I went for the Katera is that I was looking at the swithchback but Clickers archery in Norwich England had this bow as well and after drawing it back I new it was the one for me, It was so smooth to draw and felt so solide and stable at full draw I just couldent put it back on the shelf, Not shore if this email is a question or just asking someone if what I did was for the beter, although it sertanly seemed to work Regards Michael Saunders |

John, what is your traing routine? Shooting practice, physical-workout routine, and mental practice? I have read quite a few of your articles and got some help from you recently on training for indoors and I feel that it is helping me improve my X count like I was looking for so thank you for that! I was just wondering what you do on a normal basis to train all aspects of your game. Thank you in advance for your much used advice Mark Eaves |

Hello John I´m using an ultra elite from Hoyt with limb dampers betweet the split limbs. I saw on some pictures from you, that you are shooting without them. Why are doing that? Is the accuracy of the bow without them better? Thank´s for answer Klaus |

Hi John I am from South Africa On my quest to purchase my 1st bow , so many choices and so many options. The bow would be used mostly for hunting with the odd 3d shoot later in life ill take on target shooting . Ive narrowed it down to either the Drenalin or Vectrix ...The dealer just advised me to hold a few more weeks as both brands are launching new bows .man purchasing is a confusing sport on its own .... My question is how much different is a competition bow to a hunting bow. If i have to say purchase a mathews bow and later stage in life chose to purchase a Hoyt target> how much of a character difference are there and how much of an adjustment does one need to make between a target specific bow and a huting bow? Would shooting 2 different brands be detrimental to my shooting ? would it be advisable to stick to one make of bow for both target and hunting ie: hoyt and hoyt Thanks Mohammed |

Hi John Your are my last hope. I am shooting ACE 430 with 58 lb and arrow length of 29 1/2 inches. The group well and bare shaft is with in a few inches of flteched. I expect I could get it better. Moving to indoors I tried 2214 (according to Easton charts)but the unflectched went in at 45 degrees 2 ft to the left and low at 20m and no matter what poundage from 50lb upwards the results where the same. Using a medium hybrid cam rated at 290 ft per sec. Any ideas why this happens the spine for 2214 is very close to the 430? |

Hey John, I had the pleasure of meeting you at Redding this year. I was having dinner with Greg Poole and Cabe Johnson. Anyway I was wondering what is a good practice routine for the Vegas 3 spot target. I am capable of shooting 300's but would like to do so on a regular basis and increase my x count to above 25. I just recently started shooting the Vegas target reduced to 25% of the original size at 5 yds. This is supposed to represent the same picture through my scope as shooting at 20yds. I would like to get to the next level of my shooting but don't have alot of resources around me to help me get there. I am glad I found your site and look forward to talking with you. Thank you in advance. Mark Eaves |

HI JOHN, I'VE BEEN USING A CARTER EVOLUTION FOR SEVERAL MONTHS NOW. IT HAS CURED MY TARGET PANIC AND I'M SHOOTING BETTER THAN I EVER HAVE. THE ONLY CONCERN I HAVE IS THAT IT DOES NOT GO OFF CONSISTENTLY. SOMETIMES IT GOES OFF TO QUICK, WHICH I'M OK WITH, BUT OTHER TIMES I CAN'T GET IT TO GO OFF. THIS SEEMS LIKE A COMMON PROBLEM WHICK ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT. SOME PEOPLE SAY IF YOU LUBE THE JAW IT SHOOTS MUCH BETTER. BUT IT SEEMS LIKE MOST PEOPLE AGRRE, THAT THE LONGER YOU SHOOT, THE HARDER IT IS TO GO OFF. MAYBE FROM GETTING TIRED. CAN YOU ELABORATE ON THIS, SINCE I VALUE YOU OPINION. THANKS, RICK HAMILTON |

Hello John, Question to you regarding you switching from Mathews to you Hoyt Ultra Elite. This past year I bought a Ultra Elite with 2000 limbs and the C2 Cam. I have shot Hoyt Ultra and Protecs (both with 3000 limbs) since 03. This is my first shorter bow. My Problem is my transition to this bow is terrible. My groups shooting groups from 20-60 yds are as good as my other bows. But when I shoot 3D for some reason I am all over the place with shots that feel good (lefts and rights). I got frusterated and set back up my dads Protec with 3000 limbs and spirals. I shot 1 round of 3D and shot awsome. Am I seeing this difference with right and lefts due to shorter bow? A very good friend of mine mentioned that maybe I'm gripping different. I don't know. This has to be something I am doind. Can you help me out? I am shooting 60lbs and 29" draw. Would I benifit putting 3000 limbs and spirals on my elite? Sorry so long winded. Thanks for your time. |

Hi John, great site you have! Q1: Just a question about the Apex cam, i have timed the cam timing marks parallel to the shooting string. How much rotation either way can one go if one wanted to shorten or lengthen the draw length? Q2: Does one need much angle on the fletching on the X10's? I have checked my FOC in at 11.5% is this enough? thanks for your time. regards, Reno |

Hi John, I noticed what you advised for the trophy taker SS-1 arrow rest. I am interested in the SS-1 Micro, and wondered what sort of blade type I would need. I use a Cobal 2314/15 indoors and an easton FMJ Navigator outdoors 510. Obviously the indoor arrow is alot heavier as I shoot it slightly longer to weaken the spine. I am a 27.25inch draw. Its just that their is two blade types the narrow and the wide-which would be the best to use? Many thanks John and what a great web-site. |

DO THEY REALLY SHOOT MORE CONSISTENTLY AND HOW DO YOU KNOW WHETHER TO USE A ONE OR TWO BOLT? I WOULD LIKE YOUR OPINION ON THIS AND MAYBE YOU COULD EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCES ON ALL THE RESTS I MENTIONED. THANKS, RICK ALSO I SHOOT ACE'S FOR FIELD AND 3-D AND COBALTS FOR INDOORS. WHAT SIZE DO YOU USE FOR THESE ARROWS IF I WERE TO SWITCH. |

John, First, I want to thank you for having such a great website. The information is fantastic and the site is always up to date. . . I have been reading about your choice of scope magnification. You have written that you use a .77 diopter inside and .44 diopter outside. According to Sure-Loc's on line calculator, with a 31.5 inch (I got this number from another article of yours) scope to eye radius, the "power" would be approximately 2 inside and 1.5 outside. Is this correct? It seems like that is very little power. Is this common for other professionals? I currently use a 6x True Spot inside with sight radius is 30". The result with be a diopter over 1!! I use a 4x lens with a 30" radius outside. Am I using too much magnification? James

Hello John,
Here are my questiosn, hope you don't mind to answer.I found that my Mathews Apex bow sight reading is very low, and i don't know how to settle this. I was shooting and compare 2 bows last week about this, 1st bow is Mathews Apex, 2nd bow is Hoyt Ultra Elite. I think you are the best person to answer this because you were shooting apex before and now Ultra Elite. I shoot that 2 bows on the same day, same poundage 60#, same arrows, same sight & scope. There is no reason for me to excuse is my anchoring point which my friend told me it was. Now compare this 2 bows, the results show that my Apex bow setting got problem.. I had also read your article last night about the "foul Play" and it was great! I think i might draw too long. Can i send my anchoring photo to you as well? I will send 1 photo for my anchoring, 1 photo for my torso erect. Well, let me summarise it. What i mean is, everything is the SAME unless the bow. (Hoyt & Mathews).
Best Regard, Johnson Liaw

SINCE I HAVE THE EVOLUTION I HAVE GOTTEN RID OF THE TARGET PANIC AND I'M SHOOTING BETTER THAN I EVER HAVE. THE ONLY CONCERN I HAVE IS QUITE OFTEN I CAN HARDLY GET THE RELEASE TO GO OFF. I LET DOWN ALOT, ESPECIALLY AFTER I SHOOT FOR AWHILE. OHTER TIMES IT GOES OFF TOO QUICKLY. TWO OTHER PEOPLE I KNOW HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. ANY IDEA WHAT WE MIGHT BE DOING WRONG? I have just bought a Switchback XT to replace my outback as my 1st bow, with the shorter ATA I find that I need to alter my head position to get my nose on the string, my anchor point is the same as it is with the outback. The question, is it better to have this extra contact point for consistant anchor or am I drastically effecting my shot by having the peep height reduced so that as I tip my head forward to align my eye and peep plus have the string on my nose. Having tuned the bow with a walk back test for centre and then adjusting nock height for groups I find that my groups and accuracy are as they have been in the past but this does not mean it is correct and I may be missing points that stop me achieving GMB. Your thoughts would be much appreciated Ian |

John, How do you find the proper arrow spine when you shoot unmarked yardages? The methods you described are great when you shoot marked yardages and arrow speed isn't important, but when you go to unmarked, you need the advantage of speed and can't play with the tip weights. When you can't play too much with tip weights, how can you determine proper spine? Thanks, Gary |

Hi John, I have what I consider a form of target panic I believe. I'll draw back anchor and as I settle on the target the pin will go to 6 o'clock and sit there. I struggle to get the pin back up. Now it doesnt do it all the time but more so than not. So I have a lot of just low hits. Do you know of anything I could do to try and work this out aiming drills or anything. Thanks a bunch, Sean |

I was wondering if the arrow is supposed to ride the rest the whole length of the shaft and past the fletchings? On a powder test it shows the fletchings ride over the rest. I don't see how this can be consistent. This is on a TT spring steel 2 with the correct size launcher. Is my rest set up wrong? Thanks -SAM |

What would you do about arrow weight if you were shooting 3d? I shoot 27" @ about 55lbs and would like to keep the arrow light for yardage error. Colbalts are pretty heavy, and don't you need to shoot a heavy point with aluminums? Would a light spined aluminum with a light tip work for me? How do aim? What I mean is, do you put the dot on the target and try to hold as still as possible or do let the dot flot on the target? I am haveing a ton of trouble with this and just can't figure it out. I have had people tell me that I need to release as soon as my pin hits the point in the target where I am aiming ant then some tell me to put it were I want to aim and then hold as dead still as I can then sqeeze the trigger. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jason |

| I have read some statements lately where people have stated that they shoot bows in a certain ata range better. Is there a factual relationship between draw length and ata measurement that produces a sting angle that is more accurate? Or is this just a matter of comfort - thus better shooting. Bobby Daniels |
